MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim officially announced during his opening speech at the recently held MMFF Gabi ng Parangal that the summer edition to the Metro Manila Film Festival will happen this 2020.
In his speech, Lim emphasized that the said Summer Film Festival will give an avenue for more Filipino filmmakers to showcase their craft to a wider audience:
“Sa ika-45 taon ng MMFF, nais naming bigyan pa ng plataporma ang ating mga malikhaing artista upang maipamalas ang kanilang angking galing…”
Furthermore, with the MMFF happening twice next year, Lim believes that this effort to encourage the creative minds of Filipino filmmakers through more opportunities supported by the local government will significantly help boost our local film industry:
“Sigurado akong ito’y makakatulong upang lalo nating mas mapaunlad ang industriya ng pelikulang Pilipino.”
Lim also recognized the efforts of Senator Bong Go who proposed the said Summer Film Festival to the MMFF Executive Committee.
According to the MMDA official website, the Metro Manila Summer Film Festival will have its own Parade of Stars and Awards Night. Furthermore, this will give “… an additional 11 days to showcase Filipino films exclusively nationwide” (MMDA, 2019). Metro Manila Mayors also expressed their support for this endeavor.
